BOX SCORE
Purchase, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2009) - Manhattanville College (10-4, 5-4) scored 11 first half goals including eight straight to end the half and take an 11-4 lead at the break, and the Valiants cruised to a 19-10 victory over Alvernia University (8-6, 2-6) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at GoValiants.com Field.
Alvernia sophomore
Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) scored three goals in the game to break the single season goals record at Alvernia with her 55th surpassing the mark of 54 set by
McKenna Shafer ('08) a season ago. Freshman
Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin), who has scored in every game this season, tallied two goals to reach 51 for the season. That marks the first time in school history two teammates have surpassed 50 goals in the same season.
Sippel gave Alvernia the early 1-0 lead in Saturday's game just over a minute into play, but Manhattanville answered with three straight for a 3-1 lead. The Crusaders responded with the same spurt to take a 4-3 lead on Sippel's second of the day with 15:37 left in the half, but failed to score as Manhattanville closed with eight straight for a commanding halftime lead, 11-4.
Manhattanville stretched the lead to 10 goals, 15-5 with four of the first five to start the second half and stifled any Crusader rallies the rest of the way.
Alvernia split time in net getting 10 saves while Manhattanville got 14 saves from
Kristin Betsill.
Alvernia has little time to rest as it returns home to host Lycoming College in a conference game on Sunday.
