Widener Tops Women's Lacrosse 19-16

George And Walls Score Four Each For Crusaders

Chester, Pa. (Apr. 8, 2009) - Widener University (5-7, 2-5) scored 14 first-half goals and three crucial ones late to hold off Alvernia University (7-4, 2-4), 19-16 Wednesday afternoon in Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at Widener.

The Pride had a five-goal spurt midway through the first half that spanned less than four minutes and took a 14-9 lead at the break.  The lead was six goals, 16-10 in the second half before Alvernia got three straight, one each from Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin), Tara Walls (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), and Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) to cut the gap in half.

Widener scored the next goal to keep the Crusaders from pulling within two and added two more with under nine minutes to play to push the gap back to five goals, 19-14.

George and Walls each scored four to lead the Crusaders and Sippel finished with three.  Jackie Elliot was unstoppable for the Pride notching 11 goals.

Alvernia freshman Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) made eight saves in 28 minutes.  Katie Bostwick (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) played 32 minutes and stopped two.

Alvernia returns to action after the Easter break hosting Eastern University next Tuesday.
