BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (September 29, 2009) - The Crusader Field Hockey Team improved to 5-3 on the season with a 2-1 win over visiting William Paterson (4-5) this evening in non-conference action thanks to two goals from junior Ashley Tatangelo (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) .
Alvernia would strike first and early with Tatangelo's first goal of evening coming just one minute and eleven seconds after the opening whistle. Sophomore Samatha Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) found Tatangelo open in front of the net and Tatangelo would capitalize sending a shot just out of the goalie's reach for her third goal of the season.
The score would remain 1-0 for Alvernia until the 28th minute when Tatangelo would receive the penalty corner pass and attempt to lift it over the defense and the goalie. The ball would not find the back of the net, but a yellow card would be handed out to Pioneer Melissa Szeliga and Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke that Tatangelo converted for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Crusaders out shot the Pioneers from William Paterson 7-4 in the first half and earned five penalty corners to William Paterson's zero.
The second half would see a lot of back and forth action with the Crusaders firing off three shots and the Pioneers countering with six of the own. Alvernia held the 2-0 lead well into the second half until the 68th minute when the Pioneers would find the back of the net thanks to a goal from Christina Ayusa, her fourth of the season. Alvernia would hold on the last minute for the 2-1 win.
Alvernia will return to action this Saturday with a home conference game against Elizabethtown beginning at 1:00 pm.
