Camden, NJ (Oct. 15, 2010) - Alvernia University posted two dominating wins this weekend over Rutgers-Camden and Lehigh University both with identical 9-1 scores. Senior
Josh Cohen (Pottstown, Pa./Coventry Christian) led the Crusaders on Friday night with an impressive hat trick as the line of Yuro-Cohen-Mengel continued to produce large numbers on the score sheet. The line accounted for five goals and six assists.
Goaltender
Jim Fynes (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) recorded his first win of the season and although facing limited action, the quality of his saves were off high percentage scoring opportunities and odd man rushes. Fynes managed to remain remarkably sharp despite long lapses without activity and switch gears and handled some intense offensive counters by Rutgers. Alvernia's goaltender turned in 13 saves while only allowing a goal late in the second period, which ironically turned out to be a short handed tallie.
Additional goal scorers on Friday night included
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown). Mengel also contributed three helpers for a solid four-point night.
Ben Yuro cashed in a goal and two assists while defenseman
Travis Gold (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) scored his first of the season from the Vern's blue line. Freshman
Kyle Kopervas (Marlton, NJ/Wyoming Secondary) scored his goal and was credited with two goals on the evening. The Crusader's peppered Rutgers with 47 shots.
Saturday night's game lacked the energy of Friday's contest. Lehigh managed to frustrate Alvernia's offensive flow and countered with quality rushes and controlled puck movement in the Crusader's defensive zone. Mike Restuccia (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was equal to the Engineers' efforts to light the lamp and only surrendered an early goal at the 2:45 mark of the first period.
Alvernia's
Ian Meiskey (Lancaster, Pa / Hempfield) scored several minutes later to tie the contest at 1-1 and midway thru the opening period Mike Christie (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) notched the eventual game winner. Senior
Devon Coleman (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) finished the scoring in the first period cranking a short handed snapshot into the twine for a 3-1 lead.
Yuro lit the lamp twice and contributed an assist. Mengel had a three-point evening with a goal and two assists. Sophomore Mike Merfert (Clark, NJ/Arthur Johnson) scored his first of the season with a crafty move across the high slot burying a wrist shot.
Colin Goebel picked up his first career Alvernia goal and Mike Christie and Captain
Anthony Froio added goals. The Crusaders had numerous opportunities but fought keeping any kind of flow to the game. The Vern finished the weekend outscoring the opponents 19-2.
