Reading, Pa. (Feb. 24, 2010) - Centenary College (1-0) scored seven goals in the fourth quarter to steal an 11-9 come-from-behind win over Alvernia University (0-1) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia scored its first goal on the man-advantage in the first quarter. Freshman
Jarrod Wiedow (Flanders, NJ / Morristown Catholic) scored an unassisted goal followed by three more goals in the period.
Nick Wingate (Mohnton, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) scored an unassisted goal, followed by
Tom Casper (Milwaukee, WI. / Marquette University)--assisted by
Dan Hoffstetter (Center Valley, Pa. / Southern Lehigh)--and
Chris Bakes (Barto, Pa. / Boyertown) scored assisted by
Chris Baker (Exeter, Pa. / Exeter).
Centenary answered Alvernia's four goal streak with three goals in the second period, but the Crusaders were able to bounce back with a pair to hit halftime with a 6-3 lead.
Both teams scored a single goal in the third and Alvernia took a 7-4 advantage into the final quarter.
Centenary closed the gap to 7-5 with a tally three minutes into the fourth, then ripped off five goals in a four-minute span to take an 11-8 lead with under two minutes to play. Alvernia cut that gap to 11-9 on
Robert Finnegan's (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) second of the day, but the Crusaders' late comeback effort ended there.
Finnegan and Wiedow led the way with two scores each for Alvernia. Freshman goalie
Dan Baker (Wilmington, DE / Concord High School) made 17 saves for the Crusaders. Centenary's Kyle McVay saved a total of 14 shots for the Cyclones.
Alvernia returns to action Monday March 8, 2010 defending the home turf against Husson University.
