Nine-Goal First Half Leads Etown Past Alvernia

Sippel Scores A Pair For Crusaders

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 13, 2010) - Elizabethtown College (3-1, 2-0) tallied nine goals in the first half and held a 9-1 lead at halftime en route to a 15-6 win over Alvernia University (2-1, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in a rainy Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse game at Schlager Memorial Field.

The rains fell steadily from start to finish with winds gusting over 30 miles per hour.  The Blue Jays opened up a 2-0 lead with goals in each of the first two minutes of play before Alvernia junior Heather Coppola (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) netted the Crusaders' first on a free position shot three minutes into play.

Elizabethtown took control from there with seven straight goals to end the half.

The Jays scored the first two of the second half for an 11-1 lead and the two teams traded goals with Alvernia sophomore Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored her seventh of the season for the Crusaders.

Coppola's second of the game made it 12-3 Etown with 12 minutes left to play before the Jays netted a pair for a 14-3 lead.  The Crusaders answered back with the next three goals, the first from Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) and back-to-back from Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) in a 23-second span.

Etown's Samantha Redles closed the scoring with her fifth of the season in the final minute for the 15-6 final.

Sipple and Coppola led Alvernia with two goals each.  Freshman Victoria Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made 16 saves for the Crusaders.  Nicole Day made four saves for the Jays.

Alvernia will travel to Cedar Crest on Monday for its first road game of the season.
