Alvernia Levels Conference Mark With 21-7 Win Over MVille

Verrill Scores Five, George Four To Lead Crusaders

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 27, 2010) - Sophomore Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored back-to-back goals to break a 4-4 tie late in the first half, and freshman Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had her second straight five-goal game as Alvernia University (5-2, 2-2) leveled up its conference record with a 21-7 win over Manhattanville College (1-7, 1-3) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

Seven players finished with two or more goals for the Crusaders including Noelle Hoag (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) who notched her second and third goals of the season.  Manhattanville got goals from five different players led by Darby Webber who scored twice.

Manhattanville won the opening draw and scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into play, but Alvernia came right back with goals from Verrillo and Heather Coppola (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley).

The Valiants answered with a pair to take a 3-2 lead and it looked like the see-saw affair would continue when Verrillo knotted the game at 3-3 assisted by sophomore Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run).

George scored for a 4-3 Alvernia lead just as the clocked ticked under 10 minutes in the first half, but Darby tied the score two minutes later.  George then scored back-to-back goals, Verrillo added her third of the day, and Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored with seven seconds left in the half to give the host Crusaders an 8-4 lead at the break.

George and Verrillo opened the second half scoring and after another Valiants' tally, the Crusaders netted seven straight to put the game out of reach.

Alvernia will hit the road Tuesday for a non-conference game at Moravian.
