Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was one of seven players to score netting a season-high six goals to lead Alvernia University (7-2, 3-2) to a 19-15 win over Widener University (6-2, 4-1) Tuesday evening in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Verrillo scored two of her six during a 5-0 Alvernia spurt late in the second half that turned a tenuous 14-13 lead into a 19-14 cushion with five minutes to play.
Alvernia had opened up a 14-10 lead 10 minutes into the second half before the Pride answered with three straight goals to pull within one.
Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored four goals for the Crusaders,
Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) netted three, and
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) and
Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) scored two each. Widener had a team-high scores from Jackie Elliott.
Neither team led by more than two goals in the first half with Alvernia finishing the half with four of the last five scores for a 9-8 lead at halftime.
After Widener tied the score with the first goal of the second half, Alvernia rattled off five of the next six for the 14-10 lead.
Alvernia freshman Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made six saves in net for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders continue the conference schedule Thursday at FDU.
