Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and
Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored four goals apiece and Alvernia University (3-0) used an 11-goal second half to post a 20-9 victory over Wesley College (1-4) Tuesday morning in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
George opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest and Verrillo followed 16 seconds later for a 2-0 lead and the Crusaders never trailed. Wesley was able to answer on a free position goal in the fourth minute, but Alvernia closed the half with seven straight goals--three from George--for a commanding 9-1 lead at the break.
Wesley scored the first goal of the second half, but Alvernia scored six of the next seven for a 15-3 lead with 17 minutes to play.
George and Verrillo both wrapped up the Florida swing with seven goals in two games as did
Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) who tallied three against Wesley.
Heather Coppola (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) also netted three goals on Tuesday.
Sophomore goalie Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made three saves in 30 minutes to pick up her third straight win while Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) made five saves.
Alvernia returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Gwynedd-Mercy College for a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. at Schlager Memorial Field.
