Reading, Pa. (Mar. 15, 2011) - Alvernia University (4-0) jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 15-5 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College (2-3) Tuesday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin),
Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood), and
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored two goals apiece in the first half for the Crusaders, and sophomore goalie Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun)--the conference goalie of the week--made three of her five saves in the first half to keep the sheet clean.
The GMC offense hit the post a few times and had a goal disallowed on an offsides call while goalie Trisha Timony made an astounding 16 saves to at least keep the Griffins close.
Alvernia scored five of the first seven goals of the second half to pull away. Career goals leader
Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) scored four of those goals for the Crusaders and finished with a game-high five.
The Crusaders return to the conference schedule Saturday when they host Lycoming College at 1:00 p.m.
