Scoring Balance Leads Alvernia Past Lycoming

Four Crusaders Net Hat Tricks

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 19, 2011) - Alvernia University (4-0, 2-0) had four different players record three or more goals and scored 10 goals in the opening half of a 19-5 win over Lycoming College (1-5, 1-1) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.

The Crusaders got four goals each from Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) and three each from Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run).  Heather Coppola (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and Alli Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) both threw in two goals and two assists.

Five different players scored over the first 13 minutes of play as the Crusaders ran out to a 6-0 lead.  Lycoming got on the board when leading scorer Grace Gargiulo netted her first of four goals at the 10:51 mark, but Alvernia came back with four straight to close the half and take a 10-1 lead into the break.

The teams alternated scoring two goals each for the first 15 mintues of the second half leading to a 14-5 Alvernia lead, and the Crusaders again closed strong with five straight goals.

Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) and Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) each played a half and combined for 11 saves.  Lycoming's Kristina Maurer made 15 saves for the Warriors.

Alvernia continues the conference schedule at Arcadia on Wednesday.
