Castineira’s Milestone Night Sinks Ship

Senior Sean Castineira Set New Career Point Record With A Goal And An Assist

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa (Jan. 21, 2012) - Senior Sean Castineira (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic HS) recorded a goal and assist while leading Alvernia over Shippensburg University 6-1.  Castineira's two-point performance became even more significant as he now becomes the Crusader's all-time leader in total points with 115, surpassing 2011 graduate Anthony Froio.  Sean needed one point to tie Froio and assisted on the first Crusader goal, then fittingly broke the record with his own lamp lighter in the second period.

The Shippensburg Red Raiders, despite a struggling season, made Alvernia work for all three periods.  The Crusader's managed only one goal in the opening period.  The 1-0 lead came courtesy of a circus-act goal by junior Mike Christie (Collegeville, Pa. / Perkiomen HS).  The tally came from his knee's, sliding off balance just off the left post.  Christie received a slick pass across the lower right slot from Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Moreland, Pa) and proceeded to go rooftop over the Red Raider net minder.

Freshman talent Callahan continued to his stellar play, cashing in the Vern's second goal just moments into the second frame.  Callahan stole a loose puck in the Ship neutral zone and skated in uncontested releasing a low opposite post strike for a 2-0 lead and eventual game winner.  The hot second line of Callahan-Castineira-Christie stayed productive when Castineira finished a tic-tac-goal on the man advantage.  His 15th goal of the season is also a team high; precision passing from defenseman Travis Gold (Columbia, Pa. / Hempfield HS) gave Castineira a point blank look at an open cage.  The Vern kept the 3-0 lead and added upon it with just 41 seconds left in the period.  Sophomore Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa / Downingtown West HS) converted on a right wing break away snapping a wrist shot passed the low opposite post glove side.  Staquet, arguably the hardest working Vern forward defines muck and grinder hockey.  Built with speed and strength, a tough corner man, Staquet's relentless tenacity creates excellent offensive opportunities while that same effort is equally responsible for intercepting opposition scoring chances at the other end of the ice.

Alvernia put some icing on the cake in the final period notching two more goals, one from senior captain Christian Baron (Philadelphia, Pa. / LaSalle College HS) and outstanding freshman Jimmy McKelvie (Hatfield, Pa. / North Penn HS).  The Crusader's surrendered a goal midway through the period on a broken break out that resulted in a screened point shot that found a home behind goaltender Jimmy Fynes (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic HS).  Fynes improved his record to 10-1 on the season; the senior turned away 17 shots in the victory making several key stops in the first period.  A senior, Fynes lifetime record at the Vern improves to 26-3.

Alvernia will enter its biggest weekend of the second half facing off vs. West Chester University and Atlantic Region #8 ranked Penn State University Brandywine.
