BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2012) - The Crusaders extended their win streak to 10 games to start the season after depositing East Stroudsburg University 6-1 Sunday afternoon. Jimmy McKelvie (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) had four assists while line-mate
Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) scored his team leading 11
th goal of the season. The Vern pounded out five goals over a ten minute span in the opening period, providing more than enough breathing room to close out the game comfortably.
Alvernia's offensive outpouring in the first period included senior co-captain
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) ninth and tenth goal of the season. Team captain
Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) continued his torrid point-scoring streak with two goals and one assist. Staquet is easily enjoying his most offensively productive season as a Crusader. Sophomore
Eric Pawlick (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) rounded out the torching of the lamp in the period with his fifth tally of the year. Pawlick has been giving opponents fits with his explosive speed and excellent puck handling carrying the third line to first line status.
Staquet finished the Alvernia scoring early in the second period making it 6-0. The Vern dominated possession most of the game, but the ESU Warriors clamped down to keep the score respectable. Crusader goaltender
Patrick Murray (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) collected his sixth win of the season and left the game after two periods still holding the shut out.
Defensively,
Anthony Galeano (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) has remained a stalwart on the Crusader blue line providing offensive support while giving great awareness to his defensive responsibility. “Gally” as he is more affectionately known, has the uncanny ability to hold the puck in the offensive zone with his wizard-like ability to deflect opposition clearing efforts while maintaining control and holding the blue line. All the variables that are not measured in the stat sheet seem to be Galeano's forte on the ice. Although having the ability to score, Gally generally will not abandon his defensive responsibility and thus is a valued center piece to Alvernia's defensive success.
Note: Alvernia inserted goaltender
James Bangar (Whittier, Ca./La Mirada) in third period. The freshman net minder faced nine ESU shots, allowing only one early goal to start the period.
Alvernia will face ACHA Atlantic Region Powerhouse Farmingdale State University who typically represent the Empire Conference as one of the premier Division III hockey programs in the country. Farmingdale (5-0) hold a 4-1 overall record against Alvernia, however the Crusader's broke the Farmingdale bug-a-boo with a memorable overtime 5-4 win last February at the Atlantic Regional ACHA semifinal game.
