BOX SCORE Atlantic City, NJ (Oct. 6, 2012) – Alvernia University (7-0) finished off back-to-back DVCHC road wins this weekend - stomping Richard Stockton College of New Jersey 6-3. The Crusaders followed their Friday night victory over PSU-Brandywine with a convincing belting of the Ospreys down at the Flyers Skate Zone in Atlantic City. The win keeps Alvernia a perfect 7-0 to start the season.
Senior assistant captain
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored the pivotal go-ahead goal not once, but twice, to sink Stockton. Mengel tallied his fifth and sixth goals of the season, both regaining leads for Alvernia. The game-winner came midway through the final period snapping a 3-3 tie. The conference clash between the Crusaders and Stockton has quickly reached rivalry status after last year's disappointing loss that eliminated Alvernia from the ACHA DIII National Tournament. Alvernia has won five of the last six games versus Stockton and they have jumped out to a quick start in the DVCHC National Division standings.
Alvernia received a balanced scoring attack with five different goal scorers, including a pair from the blue line. Special team defensemen
Scott Dressler (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) fired home a power-play slapper from the top of the left circle, finding a friendly deflection off a Stockton screen and redirection. Sophomore
Anthony Galeano (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep.) also benefited from the power-play, jumping on a loose rebound between the offensive circles pushing home the final insurance goal.
Additional Alvernia lamp lighters included
Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) who picked up goals in both weekend games. Callahan has scored in three straight games for the Crusaders, pushing his total to six on the young season. Callahan has been benefiting from the fine play-making of
Jim McKelvie (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) who seems to always factor in the scoring sheet with assists. McKelvie and Callahan played plenty of hockey together prior to their Alvernia careers, posting robust offensive numbers for the Hatfield Ice Dogs. Alvernia's diverse offensive attack also includes freshman
Ian Meers (Morgantown, Pa./ Twin Valley) who picked up his second collegiate goal.
The most important link to Alvernia's success has been the consistent goaltending provided by
Patrick Murray (Cranford, NJ/Cranford). Murray faced 37 shots recording 33 saves. More than a handful of his brilliant saves came on the 5-on-3 Stockton advantage to close out the final minutes of the opening period. Murray improves his record to a stellar 5-0 on the season.
Alvernia has a flawless road record and now can look forward to home-ice advantage to starting next weekend for their home opener against Widener University.
