BOX SCORE Pittston, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2012) - Goaltender
Sean Boyd (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) made 25 saves in a dominating 11-0 shutout win over the East Stroudsburg University Warriors. Boyd's stellar night in the cage was supported by an offensive explosion, which included a four-goal barrage by freshman
Nico Delgiorno (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield). The Crusaders completed a two-game sweep of East Stroudsburg this season and moved to 5-0, remaining perfect in the DVCHC standings.
The Crusaders tallied three lamp-lighters in the opening period. Senior
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) recorded the game-winner which made the score 1-0, and the Vern never relinquished the lead thanks to Boyd's efforts between the pipes. Boyd faced seven shots in the first period, and although minimal in total number, he repelled several point blank ESU opportunities. Additional goals were contributed from Delgiorno and junior captain
Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West)
The flood gates opened following the first intermission as Delgiorno completed the hat trick plus one. Delgiorno's attempt to record the “natural hat trick” was interrupted by Crusader teammate
Jim McKelvie's (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) own little offensive showcase. McKelvie pumped home two lamplighters and one helper for a three point evening. The five-goal outpouring gave the Crusaders a healthy 8-0 lead entering the final period.
The third period offensive highlight came courtesy of Mengel's brilliant eye hand coordination to volley and redirect a waist high saucer pass behind the ESU goaltender. Freshman Robbie Kohler (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) released a pass from the lower right circle laterally across the high slot and Mengel batted home a winner. Mengel is the all-time leader in goals at Alvernia University with 78 lamp lighters. Mengel had a banner night contributing two assists completing a four-point night and reaching a significant offensive milestone at Alvernia. The four-point night now moves Mengel in a tie for the career total points for a Crusader with 129 which equals 2011 alum
Sean Castineira. Mengel's offensive numbers stand at 78 goals with 51 assists.
The Vern also received offensive production from
Colin Goebel (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and
Robert Savastano (Sewell, NJ/Clearview).
