BOX SCORE Sewell, NJ (Dec. 8, 2012) - The Crusaders put an exclamation point on the first semester with a 13-2 drubbing of Rowan University. The offensive outpouring continued their recent five-game winning streak. The team now heads into a long hiatus forty-day break after earning an impressive 17-3 record through the first half of the season. The #3 ranked Vern validated their ACHA Atlantic Region position with a convincing statement.
The Crusaders played a tight first period, and were actually outshot 9-8 over the opening twenty minutes, but managed to gain a 2-1 lead. Jimmy McKelvie (Hatboro, Pa./North Penn) and defenseman Vinnie “Vincenzo” Mazzanti (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) targeted the lamp lighters. Any suspense that may have been left after the first period quickly dissipated in the second period, as the Crusaders nailed down five consecutive goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Five different Crusaders were responsible for the five goal blitz. Seniors
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and
Travis Gold (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) picked up the first two, with Mengel's goal officially the game winner. Sophomore
Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and freshman
Billy Borrmann (Long Beach, Ca./Somerset) also snapped the twine, while homegrown
Robert Savastano (Sewell, NJ/Clearview) returned to his old stomping grounds in Sewell to finish the second period scoring.
The Crusaders returned from the second intermission to welcome Rowan University with another barrage of goals. Callahan, Mengel, McKelvie and Borrmann all added another goal to pad their offensive night. Junior captain
Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) continues to have his most productive offensive season, torching the lamp, and New Jersey native
Eric Pawlick collected a goal to round off the final period scoring. Defenseman
Andrew Dziedzic (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) had a stellar night both on the blue line and then transitioning up to run shifts on the Vern front lines helping the blitz of goals with four offensive helpers on the night. Both Dziedzic and McKelvie tied for honors on the night in total points with four a piece.
The real star on the helmet goes out to rock steady defensive stalwart
Anthony Galeano (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) who has been a consistent force on the Alvernia blue line. Despite not collecting a single point when it appeared that everyone scored including the traveling road secretary Tracey Pyne, Galeano has been the silent force and the
cancelator of most opposition counter rushes. The Crusaders net minder
Sean Boyd (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) picked up his sixth victory stopping 15 of 17 shots over two periods of action.
James Bangar (Whittier, Ca./La Mirada) finished the final period recording three saves on four shots.
