Reading, Pa. (Mar. 13, 2012) - On Tuesday afternoon Alvernia University Women's Lacrosse (1-2) defeated King's College (1-2) by a score of 20-11 at Schlager Memorial Field in its 2012 home opener. The Crusaders moved to 1-2 on the year as they notched the victory on a beautiful 70 degree afternoon.
After surrendering a goal in the game's opening minutes, Alvernia battled back and scored six unanswered goals sparking a 9-3 Crusader run. The home team never looked back.
The highlight of the day was the scoring barrage that was poured on by the Crusaders offense. Alvernia shot nearly 50% scoring 20 goals on 42 shots.
Senior attacker
Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored five goals on nine shots and assisted another. Teammate
Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) also scored five and assisted on three. The tandem contributed to 12 of the Crusaders 20 goals. Also helping with the scoring effort were midfielders
Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run). Verrillo had three goals and two assists and Landis tallied four more.
Alvernia outshot King's 42-25 while holding a 25-17 advantage in ground balls.
Crusader goal keeper Vicki Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) started the game and played the first 45 minutes before giving way to Jen Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Huberts). Kearn earned the W posting nine saves and making several accurate passes down the field to set up the attack.
On 10 free position shots the Crusaders converted six goals.
The Crusaders are back in action on Thursday afternoon as they travel to Gwynedd Valley to take on Gwynedd-Mercy.
