Mudslide Of Penalties Lead To 4-3 OT Loss

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Jan. 20, 2013) - Five minutes of undisciplined hockey helped topple an otherwise solid effort as Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (4-11) escaped with the overtime victory.  The Crusaders (17-4) allowed a 2-0 lead melt away late in the second period as the Osprey's erased the deficit due in part to six straight Crusader penalties in as many minutes.  The DVCHC rivals had no love lost again clashing in a tight contest that featured excellent goaltending from the Richard Stockton net minder Eddie Rafferty.

Alvernia, returning from a long winter nap, looked surprisingly sharp throughout most of the contest outshooting and outskating the Osprey's for the majority of the 60 minutes. The Vern grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 7:58 mark of the opening period coming off a deflection from senior Patrick Dolan (Cranford, NJ/Cranford HS) collecting his sixth goal. Dolan redirected defenseman Travis Gold's (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield HS) shot from just above the left hash marks.  The first period remained a one goal difference, although Alvernia peppered 12 shots with Stockton only mustering a very modest six shots on Crusader goalie Patrick Murray (Cranford, NJ/Cranford HS).

The second period better resembled the classic novel 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'.  The Vern returned from the first intermission with more vim and vigor which culminated in a quick lamp lighter off a great individual effort from freshman forward Alex Harris (Avon Lake, Oh./Wooster HS).  Harris carried the puck over the offensive blue line driving around the Stockton defense thru the left wing circle flicking a quick back hand into the back of the net.  The 2-0 lead offered some breathing room but the false sense of security would soon crumble like a cookie, and disintegrate with just over five minutes remaining in the period.

Stockton capitalized on six straight penalties over the final 5:17 minutes. Skating shorthanded from the 5:17 mark of the second period thru the 18:25 mark of the final period, the Vern surrendered the lead in a three minute span.

The Crusaders, trailing 3-2 entering the third period regained the momentum as freshman Nico Delgiorno (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield HS) snaked home a shot at the 13:12 mark for his 14th goal of the season. The third period featured some good end-to-end opportunities for both clubs with each failing to succeed on power play chances late. The Crusaders unfortunately did not fare well in the sudden death overtime allowing a late goal with only 28 seconds remaining.

The Vern will play their final conference game on Saturday afternoon versus PSU Brandywine.  A win would clinch first place in the DVCHC standings, currently the Crusaders carry a 6-1 conference record.
