Vern Shoots Out Rowan To Sweep Weekend Games

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Sewell, NJ (Oct. 19, 2013) - The Crusaders (6-2-1) won two DVCHC contests erasing East Stroudsburg University (1-6) 7-5 on home ice Friday night, and was the last team standing on Saturday in a barn burner 4-3 shoot-out road victory over Rowan University.  The Crusaders overtime shoot-out win found Alvernia in an unprecedented position, the game represented the longest shoot-out in club history sending six shooters deep to determine a winner.

Rowan, skating with a considerable upgraded roster from last season, gave Alvernia everything they could handle up until the final shooters.  Offensive hero Vinnie Mazzanti (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) capitalized on his shoot-out shot that beat Rowan goaltender Alex Crespo high glove side.  Crespo, arguably the difference maker in the game made numerous excellent saves over regulation time and the shoot-out.  Mazzanti torched a snap shot that left little reaction time to Crespo's glove side, who had been flashing leather on all night.  Vern goaltender Mike Durofchalk (Downintown, Pa./Downingtown West) finished things off at the other end only surrendering one shoot-out goal in six attempts.

Durofchalk, solid between the pipes all night, faced 28 shots while saving 25.  Durofchalk was particularly strong during Rowan's overtime power play that the Crusaders effectively killed off. Durorchalk's glove save and defining moment of the night occurred during the shoot-out - absolutely robbing Rowan's third shooter, Marty Bell with a wicked quick glove save off a great move and forehand beauty.

Additional offensive kudos belong to team goal-scoring leader Nico Delgiorno (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) who pumped home his 14th of the season.  Delgiorno has been lighting the lamp with great frequency, combining for a Friday night hat trick and a goal and assist in Saturday's early evening contest.  Not seen on the score sheet, but equally important was Delgiorno's shoot-out goal which opened the scoring.  What was seen was a Delgiorno "super man celly on his belly" celebration across center ice.  Delgiorno added seven more points this weekend with four goals and three helpers.

Alvernia sophomore Aiden Campbell (Foxboro, Ma./Foxboro) stepped up again with two fine performances which notched him a goal and assist.  Campbell, showing explosive speed converted a nifty break away in the Rowan game going to a forehand – backhand finish at full speed with a light saucer into the net.

The Crusaders started the weekend with a familiar show, the first line ripped apart East Stroudsburg University with six of the seven Alvernia goals.  The trio of Jimmy McKelvie (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Delgiorno dominated even strength on the power play and short handed.  Friday night's win was also aided by freshman Mike Urban (New Ringgold, Pa./Nativity) scoring his third goal of the season. Goaltender Sean Boyd recorded the win facing 26 shots with 21 saves.
