BOX SCORE
Hershey,Pa ( Oct. 25,2013 ) - Junior
Jim McKelvie ( Hatfield, Pa / North Penn HS ) had another huge offensive night scoring twice with two assists leading the Crusaders ( 7-2-1 ) to a 9-2 win over Shippensburg University ( 4-6 ) in DVCHC action.
The Vern rolling on a 3-game winning streak jumped all over Ship. Although the game was a grueling three period hit parade of open ice body shots it was the least amount of penalties in over 4 years.
The Crusaders jumped out to a quick three goal lead in the opening period and never looked back. First line scoring sensations once again lit up the score sheet, leading contributor was McKelvie's two goals with one lamp lighter each from line mates
Nico Delgiorno ( Columbia, Pa / Hempfield HS ) and
Brian Callahan ( Willow Grove, Pa / Upper Moreland HS ) .
Delgiorno added his team-leading 15th goal of the season will supplying two helpers which also padded his team-leading points total to 28 points. Delgiorno was credited with the game winning goal.
Sophomore
Sean Mullen ( Lincoln University, Pa / Oxford HS ) collected two goals on the evening including a power play strike. Mullen scored his 5th and 6th goals of the season to help balance the scoring across the first three lines.
Alvernia held a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission and absolutely buried the Red Raiders in the early minutes of the final period. The Crusader's lit the lamp three times in the opening four minutes to grab a commanding 8-1 separation. Senior
Robert Savastano ( Sewell, NJ / Clearview HS ) fired home a slap shot from the middle of the right offensive circle over the short-side shoulder of the Ship goaltender.
The Vern's additional stand out performances on the evening included the physical play of freshman Billy Waltz ( Mohrsville, Pa / Schuylkill Valley HS ) who dished out several bone chilling open ice blows. Waltz absorbed the toughest shots Ship had to deal out on the night while initiating the biggest shoulder-on-shoulder, open-ice check of the evening lowering the boom on a Ship forward right in front of the good guy's bench. Waltz's physical prowess on the ice gives Alvernia another dimension of confidence in keeping opposition honest from hostile intentions.
Sophomore defenseman Brett Seriekis ( Aston, Pa / Cardinal O'Hara ) was a needle in the side of Shippensburg all night long and became a magnet of attention from the entire Shippensburg roster. Seriekis continues to stand up tall in the corners and clear the crease. The defensemen has become quite adept protecting the puck and moving the play up ice transitioning carefully from defensive zone out.
Vern goaltender freshman
Mike Durofchalk (Â Downingtown, Pa / Downingtown West HS ) played adequately facing 33 Red Raider shots and turn stopping 31. Durochalk goes to 4-1 on the season for the Crusaders between the pipes.
