Reading, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2013) - Shenandoah University (1-0) broke a 4-4 halftime tie with three goals in the first seven minutes of the third quarter then tallied three more to start the fourth in an 11-6 win over Alvernia University (0-1) Saturday evening in the season-opener for both teams at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia opened strong with goals from
Daniel Frantz (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and
Brian Ray (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) for a 2-0 lead. Shenandoah cut the deficit in half with its first tally of the season then
Colin Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) netted his first of the season and the Crusaders led 3-1 after the first period.
Shenandoah turned the tables taking the second quarter by a 3-1 count to level the score at 4-4 at the halftime break. Frantz scored his second of the game to end the first half scoring.
The Hornets started the second with back-to-back even strength goals then worked the man advantage first their third of the period and a 7-4 lead. Alvernia got a tally from
Paul Tarnacki (Howell, N.J./Howell), but SU answered to keep the three-goal cushion through three periods.
The Hornets used the same combination to start the fourth getting a pair of even strength goals before a man-up goal for an 11-5 lead and Alvernia's final goal came from
Rick Reid (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) came with just over two minutes to play.
