Aston, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2013) - Alvernia goaltender
Sean Boyd (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) recorded his first post-season win in helping defeat East Stroudsburg University 6-2 in the DVCHC semifinal game on Saturday afternoon. The win kept Boyd a perfect 10-0 between the pipes for the Vern this season, thanks to a marvelous effort facing 32 shots. The victory advances the Crusaders to the Conference Championship next weekend versus Neumann University.
Alvernia scored twice in the opening period with goals from junior
Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and sophomore Jimmy McKelvie (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn). Staquet opened the scoring with a burst of speed down the right wing boards, driving hard to the net and releasing a dart backhand top shelf shortside. McKelvie scored one minute later with an equally crafty wrist shot from the lower left wing circle high opposite post. The Crusaders maintained a 2-0 into the first intermission thanks in most part to a handful of excellent pad saves from Boyd.
McKelvie opened the scoring in the second period with a power play goal and eventual game winner. McKelvie, posting up in the lower left slot received a pass threaded from defenseman
Anthony Galeano (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) burying inside the short side post. Line one factored in the scoring again midway thru the second period as sophomore
Eric Pawlick (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) continued his torrid scoring stretch with a lamplighter and a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Crusaders returned from the final intermission and sealed the deal with extra insurance goals from senior
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and defenseman
Kevin Meers (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley). The Vern will advance to their third DVCHC championship series in the last four years and will look to win the first Conference Championship in school history.
