BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Kissimmee, Fl. (March 5, 2013) - Senior Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) pitched Alvernia to two one-run victories Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Alvernia (4-0) took game one over Bluffton University (4-1) by a score of 3-2, and followed that with a nine-inning 4-3 win over Westminster College (2-4).

In the opener, Dungee went seven full innings surrendering just six hits and one earned run, while also knocking in the game-winning run. The Crusaders got on the board in the top of the third inning after Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led off the inning with a single and Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) reached on an error that allowed her to second and Peto to third. Peto scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Penk came across thanks to an illegal pitch.

Bluffton got one back in the fifth, but Alvernia answered with a run in the top of the sixth with an RBI-single from Dungee. That run was important as Bluffton put up a run in their half of the sixth to make it 3-2 but couldn't push across the equalizer.

In the second game of the day, Wolfe went nine full innings giving up just five hits and three runs, all unearned, to post her second win of the season. Westminster jumped on Alvernia with two runs in the top of the first inning after a single and two Crusader errors. In the bottom of the first, Alvernia tied the game at two with a two-RBI double from Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Academy of Sci./Tech.).

The game remained knotted at two through the eighth inning, during which time Alvernia left nine runners on base. With the International Tie-Breaker Rule in effect, Westminster went ahead in the ninth inning after a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to score the runner placed on second. Alvernia escaped the rest of the ninth unharmed, but down a run heading to the bottom of the inning. With Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) on second base, and after a popped-up bunt attempt, Penk knocked in Manowski with a single up the middle and advanced to second on the play at the plate. A single from Briana Coan (Bay Shore, NY/Bayshore) put runners on the corners, and a high-hopping ground ball from Kitchen allowed Penk to sneak in with the game-winning run.

Alvernia is back at it tomorrow at 9am against Concordia and 1pm against Illinois College.
