BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2013) - Widener University (7-8, 2-5) scored eight straight goals in the first half to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 10-3 lead on its way to a 16-10 win over Alvernia University (6-8-1, 3-4) Thursday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's lacrosse action at Schlager Memorial Field.
The Crusaders took an early 3-2 lead on a free position shot from
Hannah Dorsch (Hamden, Conn./Linganore) nearly 10 minutes into the game, but then went scoreless for the next 12 minutes while Widener poured in eight goals. Freshman
Julie Sutton (Sewell, N.J./Clearview) scored her second of the game with 7:54 left in the first half to stop the streak.
Widener then reestablished the 7-goal lead scoring with 12 seconds left before halftime.
The Pride stretched its lead to as many as nine goals at 14-5, and Alvernia got back into the game late in the second half going on a 5-1 run to pull within five, 15-10 with 2:40 left in the game.
Widener picks up an important conference win on the last week of the season. The Pride has only winless Hood College left while the Crusaders travel to Messiah College on Saturday. A Widener win and Alvernia loss would tie those two with Albright at 3-5 for the final playoff spot. Widener would emerge from the tie-breaker with a 2-0 record against the two Reading schools. Any other result Saturday--either an Alvernia win or a Widener loss--would put the Crusaders in as the fifth seed.
Senior
Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and Sutton led the way for the Crusaders with four goals apiece.
