Crusaders Complete Weekend Sweep

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2014) - Alvernia University (6-1-1, 2-0) jump started its offense, collecting a 14-6 win over Shippensburg and a 7-1 victory over East Stroudsburg in back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.

The Crusaders were a force to be reckoned with against Shippensburg, opening the contest with nine unanswered goals across the first two periods. The Raiders halted Alvernia's run with under eight minutes left in the second period, using consecutive goals to close Alvernia's lead to 9-3. The Crusaders stretched out their lead again before the end of the period, using goals by Jim McKelvie and Brett Fernandes for the 11-3 advantage. The two teams exchanged three sets of goals in the third period, giving the Crusaders the 14-6 nonconference victory.

Alvernia's offense was powered by Scott Dressler and  Nico DelGiorno. Dressler ripper three goals on the night, while DelGiorno picked up three goals and an assist. Ian Meers accounted for three points on the night, collecting a goal and two assists.

The Crusaders continued to dominate the ice on Saturday, handling East Stroudsburg in conference play. Alvernia opened the scoring for the second night in a row, this time holding a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Warriors scored their lone goal in the 17th minute of the second period, cutting the Crusader lead to 2-1. The Crusaders responded by controling the scoring for the rest of the contest, notching five unanswered goals across the second and third periods for the 7-1 win. With the win, Alvernia advances to 2-0 in the conference.

McKelvie posted three points against the Warriors with two goals and an assist. Dressler added a goal and an assist for the Crusaders, while DelGiorno picked up two more assists for the season.

Other offensive contributors on the weekend included Dustin Stuck and RJ Cummings, who each had a goal and two assists, Shane Palmer with two goals, and Brian Callahan with three assists.

Seniors James Bangar and Patrick Murray split time in the pipes, each picking up a win. Bangar collected the win against Shippensburg, facing 38 shots on the night. Murray picked up his victory on Saturday, saving 41 against East Stroudsburg.

The Crusaders return to action Sunday, October 26th as they host Rowan University in conference action at BodyZone.
