Crusaders Drop 13-10 Decision At Albright

Walsh May Have Saved The Season

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 23, 2014) - Senior Nora Walsh (Hatfield, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored a goal in the final minute that had little to do with the outcome of the game, but may have saved the season for Alvernia University (9-6, 3-3) in a 13-10 loss at Albright College (7-9, 2-4) Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's lacrosse action.

Alvernia is currently tied with Widener University for the fourth and final spot in the Commonwealth Championships with one game to go.  Both Alvernia and Widener play teams ranked above them in the standings while Albright--a game behind both following Wednesday's win--faces winless Hood College on Saturday.  If the three teams end up tied for the fourth and final spot, the tiebreaker would come down to goal differential.  Albright needed a win by four goals or more on Wednesday to pass Alvernia in goal differential.

Albright freshman Giulianna Rizzoti scored with 47 seconds left in the game to put Albright up 13-9, but the Lions were called for a false start on the ensuing draw.  Walsh was given possession and sprinted straight to the goal and scored pulling the Crusaders back within three, 13-10.  Albright won the final draw but turned it over and Alvernia held on until the final horn.

Walsh finished with one very important goal.  Julie Sutton (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) had a team-high four goals.  Colleen Reilly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) made 11 saves in net.

Alvernia finishes the regular season hosting Messiah College on Saturday then will be on the road for the Commonwealth semifinal next Wednesday at a site to be determined.
