BOX SCORE Sunbury, Pa (October 18, 2015) - First line seniors
Brian Callahan and
Nico Delgiorno combined for six total offensive points as Alvernia University (3-3-2) captured a 6-2 win over the Bucknell University Bisons Sunday afternoon.
The Crusaders, who defeated PSU Brandywine on Friday, used Sunday's victory to seal a weekend sweep.
Deuces were wild as a trio of Crusader seniors accounted for all the Alvernia scoring. Callahan, Delgiorno and Robbie Kohler each netted a pair of lamp lighters.
The Vern struck at the 15 second mark of the opening period with Callahan burying for a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders carried the same score into the first intermission and the second period was déjà vu all over again as Callahan sniped for a 2-0 lead. Callahan's second goal marked his 4
th goal of the season, and his assist later in the game amde for a productive afternoon.
Nico Delgiorno wasted no time insuring a comfortable lead, sniping his team leading 9
th goal of the season for the 3-0 advantage. Delgiorno had another goal up his sleeve for later in the night, which would eventually round out the Crusaders offense.
The Crusaders pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second period with Robbie Kohler notching his first of two goals. Kohler has quickly reached his career high of goals in a season for the Vern with five tallies.
The Crusaders managed to find more twine for a 5-0 lead midway thru the second frame.
The Bisons finally snapped the goose egg posted by Alvernia netminder Mike Durofchak late in the second period. Durofchak faced 34 shots on the day, recording his first win of the season. So far, the Crusaders have been goaltending by committee with all three net minders on rotation.
Â
Senior defenseman Brett Fernandes quietly recorded another assist from the point. Fernandes, when not dominating the Crusaders blue line, also moonlights as Alvernia's No.1 golfer on the Vern's NCAA golf team. Coach O'Connell noted "Brett had a 1
st place finish on Tuesday in Alvernia's home invitational by day, firing a field best 73. By night, he anchors the Crusaders' defense on the weekends." O'Connell added, "The score sheet never truly tells the entire story. The importance a great  defenseman plays in a games outcome, Brett is perhaps the smartest player on the ice in terms of awareness and decision making." In addition to Fernandes stellar defensive play, he was the Crusader's "Iron Man" recipient last season, playing in all 28 games running a regular shift. "Brett has been eating minutes up all year, continuing to log up some serious ice time."
The Crusaders will attempt to continue their two game win streak this Thursday night as they begin a series of games at the Santander Arena in downtown Reading. The Vern will host Shippensburg University at 7:30 PM in a true professional hockey setting. Limited seats still available. Â
