BOX SCORE Reading, Pa (Oct. 24, 2015) - Alvernia University (4-3-2) continued a quite remarkable 13-game win streak over East Stroudsburg University ( 1-2 ) Saturday, collecting a convincing 6-2 victory on "PINK THE RINK NIGHT."
Dane Beilhart notched the game winner in the second period, turning in one of his finest games to date.
The Crusaders put together three solid periods, outshooting the Warriors in each frame. The win streak over the Warriors dates back to Dec. 3, 2005, when the two teams met for the first meeting that resulted with ESU 7-0 win.
An early and important DVCHC clash, the Warriors were fresh off an overtime win over Richard Stockton College. The win will prove invaluable as the race for playoff positioning tightens up later this semester.
Freshman netminder Justin Guevarez kept the game in check during a critical five minute major penalty kill. Coach O'Connell noted, "Justin's reaction time with his leg pads has been tremendous in both his wins this season." Guevarez faced 27 shots with the majority coming shorthanded.
The Crusaders grabbed the early lead just 27 seconds into the game as Robbie Kohler collected his 6
th of the season. ESU rebounded quickly only minutes later on the power play. The Vern erased the deadlock in the final minute of the opening period as defensemen
Matt Klosinski scored his first career collegiate tally and a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.
The Vern turned the game around in the opening minutes of the second period, successfully killing a five minute major penalty. Despite the great effort, ESU was able to cash in at the 6:15 mark drawing a 2-2 tie.
Showing great patience combined with a lack of discipline, the Crusaders were once again facing a penalty kill situation that would eventually serve as the turning point of the game. Beilhart, tenacious on the penalty kill, grabbed a loose puck in the offensive neutral zone, skated down the high right hand circle and buried a slap shot short side off the pipe. Beilhart generated numerous scoring chances, including one crossbar and two posts. He picked up the game winner at the 9:20 mark.
Beilhart channeled good home cooking, playing in his backyard rink Body Zone, which has served as his home rink since his mite days. He a local product of Reading and Governor Mifflin High School, and has logged many days at the Body Zone as a member of the Reading Jr Royal.
The Vern's defense turned stingy, only allowing seven shots over the final twenty minutes. Additional goal scoring was supplied by the speedy senior
Ian Meers. Meers scored the insurance goal late in the second period .Coach O'Connell commented, "Ian's second goal was all built on his legs. Meersy has a different gear open ice and made a beauty of a rush down the left wing boards thru the left faceoff dot snapping home a winner."
Captain Scotty Dressler rounded off the scoring for Alvernia. The Crusaders found balance on the score sheet with five goal scorers contributing.
Alvernia returns to the ice next weekend, hosting Bryn Athyn in DVCHC action on Sunday, November 1st at Santander Arena. Puck drop is set for 1:00.
