Alvernia Streaks Past ESU, 6-3

BOX SCORE Pittston, Pa (Dec. 12, 2015) - Alvernia University (9-10-2) continued to have East Stroudsburg University's number, collecting a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon in DVCHC action at Santander Arena.

The Crusaders, who hold an impressive 14-1 career overall record against the Warriors, swept the DVCHC home and away series this season.

Senior Rick Vukovic has quietly been racking up points which included a goal and two assists in Saturday's matinee game.

The Crusaders, who appeared sluggish with their bus legs, couldn't manage to get up to speed in the first period. A disshelved period left the team trailing 1-0 leading into the first intermission.

Finally, at the 6:20 mark of the second period, Brian Callahan broke the shut out on the power play and the flood gates soon opened.Senior defenseman Mike Urban and Rick Vukovic added lamp lighters at the 9:07 mark and 11:17 for a 3-1 lead.

Alvernia freshman goaltender Justin Guevarez kept the Warriors honest while the team was trying to figure out the mystery of scoring on ESU net minder Josh Sedir. Once they cracked that code, the scoring chances were plenty with the Crusaders capitalizing on the scoreboard.

The third period offered a quick power play strike from ESU to cut the deficit to 3-2. Alvernia's Nico Delgiorno grabbed back the insurance goal, snapping a wrist shot bar down from between the faceoff circles. The 4-2 lead lasted less than a minute as ESU continued the exchange to slice the lead to one goal. The Crusaderss put the game to sleep when Callahan buried a hard snap shot from point blank top shelf.

Callahan collected another two goal performance with the all around excellent two way effort. Delgiorno snapped home a clean winner with only .48 seconds remaining to put some icing on the cake.

Delgiorno's goals were his 29th and 30th of the season. Delgiorno and Callahan have been red hot, burning the bulb while anchoring the first and second lines. Coach O'Connell noted, "Callahan has been man-handling his shifts and seems to just be stronger, faster and playing at a different level than his opponents."

Callahan's next assist will be the 100th  of his career, which will plant him solidly in second place on the All Time Assist list at the Vern.

Alvernia currently sits in the top 15 of the ACHA Atlantic rankings, holding onto the 14th spot.

The Crusaders will take an extended winter break, returning on action again on Saturday January 23rd against Penn State Brandywine.
