Crusaders Come Up Short in 7-6 Loss

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa (Dec. 5, 2015) -  Senior Nico Delgiorno recorded yet another hat trick as Alvernia University (6-11-1) fell short in a 7-6 deficit at the hands of the University of Delaware Saturday evening.

Delgiorno has caught fire in the last two games with five lamp lighters while recording his 14th career hat trick against the Blue Hens. The loss represents the fourth straight defeat and back to back DVCHC conference losses.

Alvernia managed to hold the lead four different times, then proceeded to lose it. Striking first, Delgiorno used his speed to create a slight separation break away, sneaking behind the Blue Hen defense and ultimately slipping the puck behind the goaltender.

Junior Robbie Kohler scored his first of two goals on the evening on a slick snap shot. Kohler snipped a nifty wrist shot from the middle of the right face off circle past the far post glove side.

Despite the Crusaders quick 2-0 lead, the Blue Hens responded quickly to cut the lead.

Senior Ian Meers help regain the two goal margin after unloading a missile slap shot from the blue line, caroming under the glove side cross bar into the cage. Coach O'Connell noted, "Meers has been falling in love with his slap shot of late and he must have been putting a lot of work into it's velocity over the summer. He's been cranking up some wicked blasts."

O'Connell continued, "Meers rocket shot was almost outdone by Nico's third goal of the evenin -  a turn around ripper from between the high circles just under the bar. It was difficult to say which shot was more impressive as Ian's appeared to maybe catch the a stick on the way with a slight deflection while Nico's went clean. Either way they were both absolute bullets."

Despite the high powered offensive effort, the Crusaders could find no answers to shut down the Blue Hen attack. Senior goaltender James Bangar was handed the loss between the pipes, surrendering all seven goals on 32 shots. The Vern managed 37 shots on the evening.
