Murray Outstanding In Loss To Bryn Athyn

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa (Feb. 6, 2015) - Alvernia University (18-4-1) dropped a hard hitting contest on Thursday, falling 3-2 to Bryn Athyn College (22-3) in a DVCHC  showdown of the top two teams.  The Lions are undefeated in the Conference and are currently ranked #2 in the ACHA Atlantic Region.  The loss, which snapped the Vern's eight game win streak, featured exceptional goaltending from Alvernia's Patrick Murray.

Senior Jim McKelvie scored the first period's only goal, giving the Vern the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. McKelvie's 26th goal of the season was also his 93rd career tally, which continues the school's mark for career goals. Unfortunately, Alvernia didn't burn the lamp again until the final forty four seconds of the game. Bryn Athyn tied the score and gained the lead in the second period carrying a 2-1 lead in the final period.

Bryn Athyn's most lethal offensive threat Terrence Johnson scored in the final minutes to add a crucial insurance goal and 3-1 lead. Alvernia's blue liner Mike Urban did manage to make things interesting in the final minute, cranking a slap shot home from the top of the right circle.

The  story line for the game was the spectacular play of Vern netminder Patrick Murray who faced 47 shots. Murray entertained a virtual shooting gallery in the second and third period. Patrick turned away a flurry of shots in the final period during a Bryn Athyn two man advantage.

Perhaps the most revealing moments of the game occurred in the third period after Bryn Athyn got whistled for a five minute major for interference. With the score 2-1, the stage was set for a golden opportunity to tie and regain the lead. It never materialized as the Vern power play mismanaged the moment and the Crusaders were unable to sustain pressure. To make matters easier, Bryn Athyn sent another player to the box setting up a full two minute 2-man advantage. Hardly able to muster any scoring chances or even gain the blue line, Alvernia's energy was deflated like air released from a balloon.

The Lions defensive penalty kill was collectively the turning point of the game. Their speed and aggressive system created an illusion that they were actually playing at even strength.

The Crusaders will look to avenge the loss almost immediately as they visit Bryn Athyn College tonight. Face off is set for 7:00 pm at Bryn Athyn's outdoor rink.
