BOX SCORE Reading, Pa (Feb. 2, 2016) - Freshman goaltender Justin Guevarez turned in another outstanding performance for Alvernia University (10-11-2) in the cage despite a 2-1 overtime loss to PSU Brandywine (11-13) Tuesday evening at Santander Arena.
The Crusaders, facing a critical DVCHC game which may ultimately determine playoff fate, had many opportunities to change the result. Alvernia fired 56 shots on net but could not figure out PSU net minder Tim Browne, who was every bit Guevarez's equal in goal.
PSU Brandywine scored in the opening two minutes and wouldn't score the game winner until deep into the overtime period. The Lions held a 1-0 lead thru two and a half full periods, frustrating numerous high percentage scoring chances mounted by the Vern.
The game featured only three penalties which created a fast paced quick game with end to end action.
Senior
Rick Vukovic finally broke the ice, tallying the game tying goal at the 12:23 mark. Vukovic, experiencing his best season, racked up his 12th goal of the season. Linemates
Scott Dressler and
Nico Delgiorno were credited with the assist.
Delgiorno's assist represented the milestone point, which now pulls him into the elite category of All Time Points leader in Alvernia history. Delgiorno sits at 207 points and is co leader with 2015 graduate Jimmy McKelvie.
Skating into the overtime, Alvernia generated the better scoring opportunities. Browne stole the show however for PSU, ultimately allowing for his opportune offense to seal the deal.
The Crusaders have a quick turn around, taking to the ice again this evening as they travel to Elkins Park to face Bryn Athyn. Puck drop is set for 8:20 p.m.
