Williamsport, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2019) - Alvernia University competed in its first event in program history on Sunday when the Golden Wolves wrestled in the Lycoming Invitational. 

The invitational was round-robin style, with each wrestler competing in three rounds in their weight class in either the freshman/sophomore bracket or junior senior bracket.

"Alvernia student-athletes put on their brand new singlets and battled every opponent across from us [today]," said Alvernia head coach Kriss Bellanca. "Overall, our coach staff was beyond proud and grateful of the young men who went to battle today. The goal was to compete to the best of our ability and begin the process toward becoming quickly relevant."

#Quicklyrelevant has become one of the team's motos in their inaugural season, and Chase Smith, Ali Capobianco, and Palmer Rodenhaber proved they are just that with 3-0 performances on the day.

Smith, competing in the freshman/sophomore 174lb bracket won each of his rounds by fall, including a third round fall that had Smith pinning Joseph Bunce of York College in just 41 seconds. 

Capobianco, competing in the junior/senior 197lb bracket, started his day with a win by fall over Jake Pine of Oneonta State. Capobianco's second bout of the day went to overtime, with Capobianco earning a sudden victory. Capobianco finished off his day with a win by fall over Lycoming's Brody Keefe, pinning Keefe in 3:47. 

Rodenhaber, competing in the freshman/sophomore 285lb bracket, won each of his first two rounds by fall. He pinned Brendan McGinley of Penn College in 3:38, and followed that with a pin of Oneonata's Samuel Berger in 1:05. In his final round of the day, Rodenhaber won by an 11-4 decision over Nicholas Winfield of Lycoming.

Louis LaRocca won the first bout in Alvernia history with a win by fall over Washington & Jefferson's Anthony Romasco in 3:57. LaRocca would go 1-2 on his day. 

Alexander Gorlin, Robert Lawlor, and Tonee Ellis each picked up two wins on their day. Gorlin earned a technical fall with a 17-0 win over Washington and Jefferson's Anastasi Nelson, and won by fall over Greg Brach of Oneonta in 1:04. Lawlor started his day with a win by fall over W&J's Vincent Catania, and won by decision over Timothy Sparks of York. Ellis won by decision over Lycoming's Michael Kustanbauter, and won by fall of W&J's Jarred Rice in the final bout of the day for Alvernia.

Corey Jenkins, Ryan Lesko, Gavin Hollingsorth, and Tanner Vogel all picked up one win on their days.

Alvernia continues its inaugural season on Saturday at the Gettysburg College Invitational. 

"We will be humble in our victories and learn from our losses to prepare for the Gettysburg Invitational," said Coach Bellanca. "We thank all of the parents, fans, and staff who have supported us to this point. [There's] more excitement to come."
