Grantham, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2022) - Alvernia University won the 2022 Messiah Petrofes Invitational with a team total of 201.5 points on Saturday during the final day of competition at Messiah.

Alvernia held the lead going into Saturday and cruised to the team victory, with the Golden Wolves taking first place by over 40 points in the field of 15 teams.

Matthew Lackman, Isaac Kassis, Mauro Pellot-Vazquez, and Palmer Rodenhaber led Alvernia with each winning their respective weight classes. Avery Leonard, Robert Lawlor, and Gino Giacolona each took second for Alvernia. 

After Lackman recorded two falls and a technical fall on Friday, he started his day out with a 6-0 decision over Muhlenberg's Nicolini Berlingeri in the 165 lb semifinal bout. He then went on to face teammate Gino Giacolona in the first place match, and Lackman pinned his teammate in 4:52 to win his weight class.

Kassis made it to Saturday following a technical fall, fall, and 5-2 decision on Friday. Kassis faced Muhlenberg's Ryan Fairchild in the 184 lb semifinal bout, and he defeated Fairchild in a 6-3 decision. Kassis then narrowly edged out a 6-5 decision over Brian Torres of Cortland in the championship bout to take his weight class.

Pellot-Vazquez recorded three straight falls to pave his path to the championship bout, including a 30 second pin over Gettysburg's Brendan Loder in the 197 lb semifinal. Pellot-Vazquez then recorded a 17-6 major decision over Springfield's Casey Allen to win his bracket.

Rodenhaber started off his day on Friday with a 37 second pin over Bridgewater State's Thomas Tehodrakos in the opening round of the heavyweight bracket. He progressed into Saturday following two more falls in the second round and quarterfinals. Rodenhaber continued to roll on Saturday with his fourth fall over the tournament, this time a 54 second pin over Springfield's Benjamin Katz in the semis. In the 1st place bout, Rodenhaber defeated Brandon Williams of Greensboro with a 3-2 sudden decision to win his bracket and round out Alvernia's showing at Messiah.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday as the Golden Wolves head back to Messiah for a dual with the Falcons.
