Alvernia Takes Eighth at Golden Bear Invitational

Sinking Spring, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2023) - Alvernia University finished in eighth place after the final day of competition at the Kutztown University Golden Bear Invitational, hosted at Berks Lanes.

Alvernia went 1-3 in Baker format matches - where total pins through five games determined the winner of the match - today, and were seeded into the seventh place match. The Golden Wolves then fell to Morgan State, 4-2, in the best of seven baker style match.

In Alvernia's first match of the day against Felician, Alvernia fell, 865-847. Alvernia outscored the Golden Falcons by 22 total pins in games three and four, but it was not hold off a 197-166 performance by Felician in the final game.

In game two, Alvernia fell to Molloy, 993-806. Alvernia's highest game of the match came in game three as Alvernia recorded a 192. But, Molloy matched that with a round of 225.

Alvernia put up a strong performance in its third match of the day, posting a 927, but Mercyhurst overpowered the Golden Wolves with a match of 968. Alvernia recorded rounds of 200+ in two games, but it was not enough to overcome the Lakers.

Alvernia avoided the Sunday sweep in its final match of the morning, defeating Dominican by a 792-605 decision. Alvernia outscored Dominican in all five games, and posted its highest game of the match in game one with a 179.

Alvernia was then seeded into the seventh place match, and the Golden Wolves drew Morgan State. After a back-and-forth in games one and two, Morgan State won the next three of four games to take the 4-2 win. Alvernia won game two with a game of 179, and won game five with a round of 150. Alvernia was narrowly edged in game three, 170-168.

"The team had a tough weekend on the lanes," said Head Coach Kerry Smith. "We will take the next two weeks to improve on some things and be ready for the Bobcat Baker Classic."

Alvernia's Emily Huntley led Alvernia on the weekend, and earned a second place overall finish on Saturday to earn All-Tournament Team honors.

"Emily bowled amazing all weekend, we are all incredibly proud of her for making the all tournament team," said Smith. " It was well deserved."

Alvernia has next weekend off before returning to action out in Pittsburgh for the Bobcat Classic on November 4-5.
