Golden Wolves Take Two Against Eastern

Reading, Pa. (March 11, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-5, 2-0) opened up its 2023 MAC Commonwealth schedule with two wins over Eastern University (2-10, 0-2) in the first day of its series with the Eagles on Saturday at Alvernia.

The MAC Commonwealth format this year is for a doubleheader to be played as two seven inning games at one school, along with a single, nine inning game at the other school. In game one of the afternoon, it took 11 innings for the Golden Wolves to come out on top with a 4-3 win with Thomas Faggioni walking it off with an RBI double. Game two of the afternoon had Alvernia get out of a few jams to take a 9-6 win over the Eagles.

Game one of the afternoon saw Alvernia take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Jason Kelly driving in two runs on a single to right field.

The Eagles tied it up at 2-2 with runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings, but Alvernia retook the lead, 3-2, on a Cameron Abele double to drive in Faggioni.

The Eagles again tied it up at 3-3 on an infield single in the top of the sixth, and it took until the 11th inning for either team to break through. Billy Dougar doubled down the left field line with one out to get in scoring position. Faggioni then stepped up to the plate and doubled to the gap to drive in Dougar and walk it off with a 4-3 win over the Eagles.

Jack Cossa got the start on the mound and finished with four strikeouts. Matt Mays picked up the win in relief, pitching one inning without giving up a hit.

Faggioni led Alvernia in game one with two hits, two runs, and an RBI, and Abele went 3-for-3 at the plate.

In game two of the afternoon, Dougar got Alvernia on the board with a two-RBI single to center in the bottom of the second. Eastern got one back in the top of the third, but Alvernia retook the two-run lead, 3-1, with a Mike Ramundo single up the middle.

Alvernia added two more in the bottom of the third, with Ramundo scoring on an error during Brandon Smith's at-bat, and Jason Lind singling up the middle to score Kelly.

The Golden Wolves kept it rolling in the fourth with Mike Pulcini and Ramundo driving in runs on sacrifice flies to make it a 7-1 game, and Kelly capping off the inning with a double down the right field line to bring in Zachary Rogacki for the 8-1 lead.

The Eagles got three runs back on two home runs in three at-bats in the top of the fifth to cut Alvernia's lead in half, 8-4. The Eagles then brought in another run with a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth to make it 8-5. Michael Andrew came onto the mound with the bases loaded and Eagles still threatening, but he struck out the first batter he faced to end the threat.

The Eagles again threatened in the top of the seventh, getting on back on an infield ground out. The Eagles then had a runner on third with two outs. A pitch off the hand of Andrew went off Alvernia's backstop and took a favorable bounce to Andrew charging in after the ball and the runner on third sprinting home. Andrew as able to get to the ball in time and flick it to Lind covering home for the third out to seal the 9-6 win.

Jake Umans picked up the win on the mound in the start with four strikeouts and eight hits. Andrew got the save in relief with one strikeout and one hit. Ramundo and Dougar finished with two RBIs each, and Dougar finished with three hits.

Alvernia is back in action tomorrow at Eastern looking for the series sweep with a single game at 3 PM.
