Alvernia Completes Sweep of Eastern With 24-3 Victory

St. Davids, Pa (March 16, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-5, 3-0) put up ten runs in the third and 14 in the ninth inning to take down Eastern University (2-11, 0-3) 24-3, in a MAC Commonwealth baseball matchup Thursday afternoon at Eastern.

The victory secured the series sweep of Eastern after Sunday's game was postponed until today.

The Golden Wolves struck first with a ten spot in the top of the third inning that started with a Thomas Faggioni two-run homer after Mike Pulcini tripled to lead off the inning giving Alvernia a 2-0 lead. Jason Kelly then singled to left to drive in Zach Rogacki and Cameron Abele to extend the lead to 4-0. Nick Nutle followed Kelly with an RBI single of his own to make it 5-0 before Billy Dougar doubled down the left field line to drive both Kelly and Nutile in and push the Golden Wolves lead to 7-0. Faggioni stepped up to the plate next and drove in his third and fourth RBIs of the inning with a two RBI double, making it 9-0 Golden Wolves. Rogacki ended the scoring run with an RBI single to center field, driving in Faggioni and giving Alvernia a double digit lead.

Eastern grabbed one back in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Camden Angell singled down the left field line to drive in Joe Paradise to cut the Alvernia lead to 10-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the next two innings before Eastern's Connor Schilling drove in Angell with an RBI double down the left field line to make it 10-2 Golden Wolves.

The Eagles continued to chip away when Brian Lang homered to right center to make it 10-3 Alvernia in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Alvernia tacked on 14 more runs in the top of the ninth for insurance when Rogacki scored on an error, Mike Ramundo scored on a Joe Glass RBI double to center field and Brandon Smith followed that up with a two RBI double of his own to make it 14-3 Golden Wolves. Faggioni followed with a two RBI double to make it 16-3 and Dougar scored on a fielding error to push the lead to 17-3 Alvernia. Grant Fitzgerald walked with the bases loaded to force Faggioni in, Bobby Hansen ripped a two RBI single through the left side and Fitzgerald scored on an error as Alvernia extended the lead to 21-3. Dougar then reached on an error that scored Hansen to make it 22-3 Golden Wolves. Abele capped off the 14 run inning with a two RBI double to secure the 24-3 victory.

Evan Wood got the win on the bump for the Golden Wolves and allowed one run over six innings and fanned nine batters.

The Golden Wolves were led by Faggioni who went 5-6 with six RBIs and a home run, Rogacki went 3-5 with two runs scored and Pulcini tallied a double and a triple. Abele, Kelly, Hansen, Smith and Dougar all recorded two RBIs.

The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they open up their three game series at Widener at 3:30 PM.
