Williamsburg, Va. (Oct. 20, 2024) - Alvernia Men's Golf posted a team score of 314 and is in sixth place through the first day of The Melee at Ford's Country Club in Williamsburg, Virginia on Sunday.

Shawn Williams posted an even par round of 72 to lead Alvernia on day one. He is in a tie for fourth place in the field of 70 golfers. Williams played the front nine at 1-under par. He started his day with a birdie on the first hole and was 2-under through seven holes with a birdie on the seventh. He gave one back with a bogey on the eighth to make the turn at 1-under. He moved back to 2-under with a birdie on the 10th before giving another stroke back with a bogey on the 11th. He went right back to 2-under with a birdie on the 12th before playing the final six holes at 2-over for his round of 72.

Williams is in a three way tie for fourth heading into the final round of Monday. He is just one stroke back of the three-way tie for first place.

Jackson Hoovler finished in second for Alvernia and is in a tie for 13th with a round of 4-over 76. Hoovler started his day with a birdie on the first hole, but he found trouble on holes three, four and five before settling in for four straight pars to make the turn at 5-over. He posted a bogey on the 10th before going birdie-bogey on 11 and 12. He then played his final six holes and 2-under with birdies on the 13th and 17th for his round of 76.

Matthew Gagliardi finished in third for Alvernia and in t-45th overall with a round 82. Gagliardi's round was highlighted by 12 pars and a birdie on the ninth.

Jakob Chapman rounded out Alvernia's counting scores with a round of 84 to sit in 55th place overall. Chapman had eight pars on his day and a birdie on the 10th.

Kenton Lightburn played as Alvernia's fifth and is in a tie for 56th with a round of 85. Lightburn had six pars on the day and birdies on the 10th and 12th.
