Alvernia Finishes Seventh at The Melee

Williamsburg, Va. (Oct. 21, 2024) - Alvernia Men's Golf took seventh place at The Melee with a second round team score of 313 for a two-day total of 627 at Ford's Country Club in Williamsburg, Virginia on Monday.

Shawn Williams was Alvernia's top finisher with a two-day total of 151 for a t-10th finish in the field of 79 golfers. Jakob Chapman posted Alvernia's low-round of the day on Monday with a round two score of 75 to improve his day one score by nine strokes.

Williams finished with a 7-over 79 on Monday for his two-day total of 151. Williams started on the 3rd hole at Ford's and was 4-over when he made the turn to the 10th hole and his seventh hole of the day. The 10th marked a great start to the back nine for Williams. He played the back at even par with a seven pars and a birdie on the 17th. He then bogeyed his final two holes of the tournament when returning to the front nine for his round of 79.

Jackson Hoovler finished in second for Alvernia overall and in a tie for 27th overall with a two-day total of 158. Hoovler shot an 80 on day two. He birdied his first five holes of the tournament, but had trouble on the ninth and headed to the back nine at 3-over. He got a stroke back with a birdie on the 12th, but had three bogeys over the final six holes of the back nine. He played his final three holes at 3-over for his round of 80.

Chapman finished in third for Alvernia and in a tie for 35th overall. Chapman got his day started with a par on the fifth hole and was 1-over when making the turn onto the back nine. He played the back at 1-over with six pars and a birdie on the 18th. He then played his final four holes at 1-over with three pars and a bogey for his round of 75.

Kenton Lightburn was Alvernia's fourth counting score on Monday with a round of 79. Lightburn's 79 was a six stroke improvement from his first round and he finished the tournament in a tie for 47th with a two-day total of 164. Lightburn started on the fifth hole and struggled a bit early on before settling in for his final eight holes of the day. Lightburn started that stretch with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th, but bogeyed 17 and 18. He returned to the front nine to close out his round and played his final four holes at 1-under par with three pars and a birdie on the second hole.

Matthew Gagliardi finished in fifth for Alvernia and in a tie for 54th overall with a two-day total of 166. Gagliardi posted an 84 on Monday. He had four birdies on his round and played a six hole stretch at 4-under with four birdies on two pars across holes 8-13. 

Monday marked Alvernia's final stroke play competition of the fall season. Alvernia has the match-play style Yocum Cup against Albright remaining this fall. Day one of the Yocum Cup is scheduled for Monday, October 28th at The Berkshire, and will conclude on Tuesday, October 29th at LedgeRock.
