Williams and Chapman Lead Alvernia on Day One of Yocum Cup

Reading, Pa (October 28, 2024) - Alvernia University's Jakob Chapman and Shawn Williams won the final three holes of their match to grab one point for the Golden Wolves in the annual Yocum Cup against crosstown rivals Albright College at The Berkshire Country Club Monday afternoon.

The Lions lead 2-1 after day one with the pairings of Sam Elsen and Evan Twyman taking down Matt Davies and Kenton Lightburn and Ben Egin and Jonathan Liljebald taking down Matthew Gagliardi and Jackson Hoovler. Alvernia has not won the cup since the fall of 2021 when they took down the Lions 8.5-0.5.

How it Happened
  • Matt Davies and Kenton Lightburn took on Sam Elsen and Evan Twyman from Albright in the first group of the day with the Albright pairing taking the match 2 & 1. The Lions grabbed the lead on the opening hole but Davies/Lightburn matched the Lions for the next four holes before a birdie at the sixth put Albright two up. Lightburn carded a birdie at the seventh to cut the lead to one heading into the back nine. Elsen/Twyman pushed the lead to as much as three up after winning the 11th and 13th holes but a Davies birdie at 15 pulled it back to a two up lead. The Lions would see out the final two holes and take the 2 & 1 victory over Davies/Lightburn to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the Cup.
  • Matthew Gagliardi and Jackson Hoovler took on Ben Egin and Jonathan Liljebald in the second fourball pairing but dropped their match to the Lions 3 & 2. Hoovler and Gagliardi jumped out to an early two up lead after taking the first two holes but the Lions leveled things up after taking the fourth and fifth holes. A birdie at the seventh put Alvernia one up but it did not last long as the Lions bounced back with a par at the eighth to send the match to the back nine all square. Egin and Liljebald grabbed the lead on the tenth hole after a birdie three and then made it three up after back to back wins at 12 and 13. A Hoovler birdie at the 14th pulled Alvernia within two but the Lions took the 15th and then halved the 16th to secure the 3 & 2 victory over Hoovler and Gagliardi.
  • The pairing of Jakob Chapman and Shawn Williams were able to grab a point for the Golden Wolves and spoil the day one sweep for the Lions with a two up victory over Chuck Bailey and Oliver Liljebald. Williams/Chapman took an early lead after a birdie at the first but the Lions leveled it up with a birdie at the par five fourth. The Golden Wolves responded right away with a birdie at the fifth but the Lions won the eighth and ninth holes to take a one up lead heading into the back nine. A birdie at the tenth squared the match up but the Lions bounced right back, taking the 11th hole to regain the one up lead. The Lions would hold the one up lead for the next four holes before Williams and Chapman got hot at the right time. Williams carded a birdie three at the 16th to level the match and the both Chapman and Williams carded par on 17 and 18 to swing the lead in their favor, two up and take the victory in the match and salvage a much needed point for the Golden Wolves heading into the final day at LedgeRock tomorrow.

Up Next
  • Day two of the Yocum Cup heads to LedgeRock tomorrow to finish up the match play event with singles play. The Lions hold a 2-1 lead over the Golden Wolves heading into day two.
