Albright Retains Yocum Cup over Alvernia

Mohoton, Pa (October 29, 2024) - Alvernia University only took one singles match on day two of the Yocum Cup as Albright College retained the cup for the third year in a row after taking five of the six singles matches Tuesday afternoon at LedgeRock.

The Lions retained the historic Yocum Cup after going 5-1 in the singles matches on day two to secure a 7-2 victory over the Golden Wolves.

How it Happened
  • Jackson Hoovler was the lone Golden Wolf to win his singles match with a 4 & 2 victory over Albright's Jonatan Liljeblad. Hoovler grabbed the lead after the first hole but Liljebald responded on the second to square the match. Liljeblad then won the fourth hole to grab the one up lead but Hoovler birdied the sixth and then pared the seventh to swing the lead back in his favor, one up heading to the back nine. Hoovler then went up two after a par at the 11th but lost the 12th hole to go back to one up. Hoovler then closed out his match by winning the 14th, 15th and 16th holes to close out Liljeblad on the 16th hole, 4 & 2.
  • Kenton Lightburn dropped his match to Albright's Oliver Liljeblad 4 & 3. Lightburn was one up through four holes but Liljeblad leveled the match at the fifth and then won the sixth and the seventh holes to take a two up lead. Liljeblad then extended his lead to four up after taking the ninth and tenth holes and then added one more on the 13th to make it a five hole lead. Lightburn grabbed the 14th hole but it was not enough as Liljeblad secured the 4 & 3 victory by halving the 15th hole.
  • Matt Davies dropped his match to Albright's Chuck Bailey by a score of 6 & 5. Bailey took a two up lead after the first two holes and never looked back. Bailey extended the lead to four up after winning the fourth and sixth holes before pushing the lead to five heading to the tenth tee. Bailey made it seven after taking the tenth and the 11th holes but Davies bounced back by winning the 12th but Bailey halved the 13th to secure the 6 & 5 victory.
  • Matthew Gagliardi fell to Sam Elsen of Albright by a score of 5 & 4. Elsen took an early three up lead after grabbing three of the first four holes. Elsen then made the turn with a six up lead after winning the sixth, seventh and eighth holes heading to the tenth tee. Elsen then won the tenth but Gagliardi did not go away as he won back to back holes at 11 and 12 but Elsen grabbed the 14th hole to secure the 5 & 4 victory over Gagliardi.
  • Jakob Chapman dropped his match to Evan Twyman of Alright, one down, in the day's tightest match. Twyman came out of the gates and took a two up lead after three but Chapman grabbed three straight holes at four, five and six to swing the lead in his favor, one up. Twyman won the seventh hole to level the score but Chapman fired right back with a par at the eighth to take a one up lead to the back nine. Twyman swung the lead back in his favor after winning the tenth and 11th holes but Chapman won the 12th with a nice birdie to level the match. Twyman battled back and won the 14th and 15th holes to make it two up in favor of Twyman but Chapman would respond again with back to back pars at 16 and 17 to send the match to the 18th tee all square. Twyman then carded a birdie on the par five 18th to secure the one up victory over Chapman.
  • Shawn Williams rounded out the matches for the Golden Wolves and fell to Ben Egin from Albright by a score of 3 & 1. Egin and Williams halved the first three holes before Williams grabbed a one up lead after a par at the fourth. Egin responded right away by winning the fifth hole to level the score and then took a two up lead into the back nine after taking the sixth and eighth holes. Williams grabbed the tenth to cut the lead to one but Egin came right back, winning the 11th hole to push the lead back to two. Williams grabbed one back at the 13th but Egin yet again responded by winning the next hole to keep the lead at two up heading to the 15th. Williams and Egin would halve the next two holes before Egin won the 17th to secure the 3 & 1 victory over Williams.
