Golden Wolves Go 1-1-1 Over the Weekend at the DVCHC East Coast Showdown

Aston, Pa (November 25, 2024) - Alvernia University Men's Club Ice Hockey competed at the DVCHC East Coast Showdown and recorded a 1-1-1 record over the weekend in men's club ice hockey action at Aston Ice Works. 

The Golden Wolves took down Catholic by a score of 7-3 in game one but then fell to Rutgers on Saturday by a score of 4-2. The Golden Wolves then took on Kutztown on Sunday and tied the Golden Bears 2-2 to wrap up the weekend. 

Game 1: Catholic 3, Alvernia 7

How it Happened 
  • The Golden Wolves jumped ahead from the start with a four goal first period to take a 4-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Reece Wilson got things going with a goal in the final ten minutes of the period after assists from Kiran Khetarpal and Anthony Downs
  • Nathan Ciccarelli and Brendan Fergus then assisted Christian Kehoe in the final three minutes of the period to push the Alvernia lead to two. Bryan Pilpel and Jimmy Sparacio then netted goals in the final minute of the period as the Golden Wolves took a 4-0 advantage into the first intermission. 
  • Catholic would cut the lead in half in the second period with two goals in the first ten minutes to make it a 4-2 game. 
  • The Golden Wolves then responded with two more goals in the final 48 seconds of the period to push the lead back up to four, 6-2 after two periods of play. Pilpel netted his second goal of the night thanks to an assist from John Bellantoni to make it 5-2 and then Logan Buch and Bellantoni assisted Ben Maurer in the final seconds of the period to make it 6-2. 
  • The Golden Wolves and the Cardinals both recorded a third period goal, both of which came seven seconds apart. Catholic found the back of the net with 16:37 left in the third period to make it 6-3 but the Golden Wolves responded seven seconds later after Downs assisted Sparacio to secure the 7-3 victory for the Golden Wolves.

Game 2: Rutgers 4, Alvernia 2

How it Happened 
  • Rutgers netted all four goals in the first period to grab an early 4-0 lead. Rutgers netted three of its four goals in the first ten minutes of the period and then added one more on a powerplay in the final two minutes to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. 
  • The Golden Wolves pulled one back early in the second period when Christopher Claycomb and Logan Buch assisted Ben Maurer on a power play goal but Rutgers still held a 4-1 lead after two periods. 
  • Alvernia would find the back of the net just one more time in the third period after Buch netted a goal after assists from Maurer and Philip Juzwick but it was not enough as Rutgers secured the 4-2 victory. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Logan Buch recorded a goal and an assist for the Golden Wolves and also went over the 100 career point mark. 
  • Ben Maurer recorded a goal and an assist as well and Christopher Claycomb and Philip Juzwick both tallied assists. 
  • Jackson Lesko recorded 12 saves in net and Carson Lopez tallied 28 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Game 3: Kutztown 2, Alvernia 2

How it Happened 
  • After a scoreless first period, Kutztown got on the board first with a goal in the final six minutes of the second period after Joshua Bower found the back of the net to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage after two periods of hockey. 
  • Kutztown then doubled its lead in the first five minutes of the third period after a goal from Nicholas Leone made it 2-0 Golden Bears. 
  • Bryan Pilpel grabbed one back for the Golden Wolves after assists from Logan Buch and Zack Moats made it a 2-1 game with ten minutes to go. 
  • Alvernia found the leveler in the final four minutes of the contest after a Jimmy Sparacio goal as the game headed to the overtime period tied at two. 
  • Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the overtime period as the Golden Wolves and Golden Bears ended in a 2-2 tie.
