Alvernia Takes Fifth at Wilmington

Wilmington, Del. (Feb. 18, 2024) - Alvernia University went 3-0 in Sunday's best of seven matches to take fifth place at the Wilmington Wildcat Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Alvernia started the day with a 4-3 win over Daemen University. The Golden Wolves took game one of the match, 190-163. Alvernia dropped game two before rebounding with a 226 to take game three. Daemen stayed in it and took game four, 181-171 to even the match at 2-2. Alvernia retook the lead with a 236-166 win in game five, but Daemen took game six to force the decisive game seven. Alvernia then picked up the match win with a 224-201 win in game seven for the 4-3 match win.

Alvernia then took down Caldwell University 4-1 in its second match of the day. The Golden Wolves narrowly edged Caldwell, 195-192, in game one before dropping game two. Alvernia again picked up a narrow 183-180 win in game three before posting a 255 in game four to better Caldwell's 234. That 255 marked a new program-high baker game. Alvernia then won the match with a 170-150 win in game five.

The Golden Wolves moved onto the fifth place match and defeated Mercyhurst, 4-3. Alvernia lost to Mercyhurst 4-0 last weekend and 890-847 earlier this weekend. Alvernia got off to a strong start against Mercyhurst on Sunday with a 238-209 win in game one. Mercyhurst defeated Alvernia by one pin in game two before Alvernia took game three, 214-182. Mercyhurst picked up a win in game four before Alvernia took game five, 205-188. Mercyhurst forced a game seven with a 239-180 win in game six, but Alvernia came through with a 244-210 win in game seven for the 4-3 match win.

"The Golden Wolves bowled great all weekend," said Head Coach Kerry Smith. "They worked together as a team to bring home a fifth place finish. I couldn't be more proud of their hardwork and teamwork."

The host Wildcats of Wilmington took first place, Kutztown University took second, and Felician University finished in third.

Alvernia has a month off before returning to action back at Wilmington on March 16th and 17th.
