Alvernia Splits Day One of AMCC Championship

Pittsburgh, Pa. (March 22, 2024) - Alvernia University Women's Bowling went 1-1 on the first day of the AMCC Women's Bowling Championship on Friday at Pines Plaza Lanes in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The AMCC Conference Championship follows a mega-match format. A mega-match is a best of three format that includes a five-person team match, a Baker-style total pinfall match, and an if-necessary best-of-seven Baker match to determine the winner. After the first round of play, the tournament becomes a double-elimination style championship.

The Golden Wolves, who are the 3-seed in the conference championship, started their day with a 2-0 win over #6 Pitt-Bradford. Alvernia defeated the Panthers 2-0 to start the tournament. Game one of the opening-round match was a traditional team format and the Golden Wolves defeated the Panthers, 870-773. Mia Siminitus led Alvernia in the traditional format game with a round of 212, and Morgan DuPont followed with a 185. The match then moved to a Baker match, and Alvernia again downed the Panthers, 845-793, to move onto the next round of play.

Alvernia then took on #2 William Smith, who had a first-round bye. Alvernia nearly hit 1,000 in the team format, downing the Herons 998-840. Alvernia had a pair of 200+ games, with Morgan DuPont leading the way with a game of 235. Reaghan Smith also finished with a 213. The Herons then cruised to a 1,003-795 win in the Baker game to force the match to a best-of-seven Baker match.

The Herons edged Alvernia by a combined six pins in the first two games of the best-of-seven match to take an early 2-0 lead. Alvernia then bounced back and took game three, 181-180, and cruised in game four, 193-158, to even the match up at 2-2. Alvernia then took the lead in the match, 3-2, with a 189-166 win in game five. But the Herons came back and took games six and seven to secure the 4-3 best-of-seven win and 2-1 mega-match win.

With the loss to William Smith, Alvernia must fight its way out of the elimination bracket. The Golden Wolves will begin that battle on Saturday morning with a mega-match against of #5 NJCU. The winner of Alvernia vs. NJCU will move on to face the winner of #1 Saint Vincent vs. #2 William Smith. The loser of the Alvernia vs. NJCU match is eliminated from the conference championship.

Bowling will get underway again on Saturday morning at 9:30 AM with the first games of the day.
