Susquehanna Downs Alvernia, 16-9

BOX SCORE Selinsgrove Pa, (March 4, 2024) - Susquehanna University (3-2) used a big second quarter to swing the lead in its favor and take down Alvernia University (2-3) 16-9, in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup Monday night at Susquehanna. 

The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after the first 15 minutes of play but Susquehanna netted ten unanswered goals in the second and early into the third quarter to swing the lead in their favor. The Golden Wolves scored four goals in the fourth quarter but it was not enough as the RiverHawks took the 16-9 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • Susquehanna opened the scoring up with just over 11 minutes left in the first quarter to make it a 1-0 game but Alvernia responded immediately after controlling the ensuing draw, Meagan Moky fired her shot past the RiverHawk's goalie to tie the game at one.  
  • Haleigh Lackner notched her name on the scoresheet just over a minute later to give the Golden Wolves a 2-1 lead with nine to go in the first. 
  • Alvernia pushed the lead to 3-1 after Lackner connected with Gracie Brower who collected the high pass and in one swift motion fired the ball into the back of the net. 
  • Moky tallied her second goal of the game with two minutes left in the first quarter when she converted a free-position opportunity and made it 4-1 Golden Wolves. 
  • Susquehanna grabbed one back in the final two minutes of the first quarter to make it 4-2 Golden Wolves after the first 15 minutes. 
  • The RiverHawks then ripped off seven straight goals in the first 12 minutes of the second quarter to swing the lead into their favor, 9-4 with three minutes to go in the half. 
  • Susquehanna netted one more at the end of the first half to take a 10-4 lead into the break. 
  • Susquehanna tallied two more goals in the first three minutes of the second half to push the lead to eight, 12-4. 
  • Sherrin Smith broke the scoring drought for the Golden Wolves with four minutes to go in the third quarter to make it a 12-5 game. 
  • The RiverHawks responded three minutes later with a goal in transition to make it a 13-5 game after three quarters of play. 
  • Olivia McCambly made it a 13-6 game at the start of the fourth quarter when she converted a free-position opportunity. 
  • Susquehanna rattled off three straight in the next four minutes to extend the Susquehanna lead to 16-6. 
  • The Golden Wolves netted three straight in the final seven minutes of the game with Mackenzie McKinney finding the goal and Lackner scored two but it was not enough as Susquehanna secured the 16-9 victory.  

Inside the Box Score 
  • Haleigh Lackner led Alvernia offensively with four points off three goals and one assist. Lackner also picked up a team high five ground balls. 
  • Meagan Moky netted two goals for Alvernia and finished with a team high seven shots on goal. 
  • Mackenzie McKinney, Sherrin Smith, Olivia McCamby and Gracie Brower all netted goals for the Golden Wolves as well.
