Gagliardi Leads Alvernia on Final Day of Vulcan Invitational

California, Pa (September 17, 2024) - Matthew Gagliardi fired in a low round of 75 to pace Alvernia University on the final day of the Vulcan Invitational Tuesday morning at Cedarbrook Golf Club hosted by California University of Pa.

Gagliardi recorded the low round on the day for the Golden Wolves, Jackson Hoovler and Kenton Lightburn both recorded 78s and Shawn Williams rounded the counting scores with an 82. Matt Daveis recorded an 86 in round three and Jakob Chapman finished with an 87.

The Golden Wolves finished in eighth place overall in the team race with a team total of 961 (327/321/313).

How it Happened

Matthew Gagliardi led the way for the Golden Wolves in round three with a team low round of 75. Gagliardi started his day on number 12 and recorded four pars in his first seven holes as he made the turn to number one. Gagliardi then birdied one, four and six on the front nine and mixed in two pars on two and five. Gagliardi ended his front nine with two pars but a double on nine saw him post a one over 37 on the front. Gagliardi bounced back with a birdie on ten and a par on 11 to close his final round out, card a 38 on the back and fire in a three over 75 on the day. Gagliardi finished in 39th place.
Jackson Hoovler recorded a 78 in round three of the Vulcan Invitational and started his day on number 13. Hoovler carded three straight pars before a double on 16 but bounced back with back to back pars on 17 and 18 to head to number one. Hoovler then went par, birdie, bogey on holes 1,2 and 3 before a par on four and another double on five. Hoovler then recorded a birdie and two pars in his final four holes on the front nine to post a two over 38. Hoovler carded two pars and a bogey in his final three holes on the back nine to post a 40 on the back and a six over 78 on the day. Hoovler finished his tournament in a tie for 21st place and recorded the best overall finish for the Golden Wolves.
Kenton Lightburn also fired in a 78 in the final round for Alvernia and started his day on the par three 11th. Lightburn carded a bogey on his first hole but then ripped off five pars and a birdie in his next six holes before a double on the 18th. Lightburn carded four pars, four bogeys and a birdie on his front nine to post a three over 39 on the front. He then surrendered a bogey on the par five tenth, his last hole of the day to card a 39 on the back and a 78 on the round. Lightburn finished in 50th place.
Shawn Williams posted the final counting score for the Golden Wolves with an 82. Williams started his day on number 12 and ripped off five pars in his first seven holes but a bogey and double bogey on 16 and 17 saw him go into number one three over. Williams then recorded five pars on the front but four bogeys saw him post a 40 on the front nine. Williams then recorded a par on the tenth hole but a double on his final hole of the day saw him card a 42 on the back nine and an 82 on the day. Williams finished his tournament in 30th place.
Jakob Chapman rounded out the possible counting scores for Alvernia and carded an 87 on the final day. Chapman started on the tenth hole and started birdie, par, par but big numbers on 13-17 plagued his back nine as he carded a 43 on the back. Chapman headed to one and recorded four pars on the front nine but more big numbers derailed his front nine as he posted a 44 on the front and an 87 on the day. Chapman finished in 47th place.
Matt Davies rounded out the scores for the Golden Wolves, playing as an individual. Davies posted his best round of the tournament with a round three score of 86. Davies also started his day on the par five tenth and started his day with three straight bogeys before rattling off back to back pars on 13 and 14. Davies then carded three straight big numbers before a bounce back birdie at 18 saw him post a 43 on the back nine. Davies recorded a par on the first but more bogeys plagued his front nine. He then responded with a birdie at the par five sixth and tallied two pars in his final three holes to post a 43 on the front and an 86 overall on the round. Davies finished in 48th place.
