Albright Takes Yocum Cup Over Alvernia

Reading, Pa. (October 29, 2025) - Albright College recorded nine wins in the singles matches over Alvernia University Wednesday to secure the Yocum Cup for the third straight year with a 12.5-1.5 victory over Alvernia at Reading Country Club.

The Lions came into the day with a 3.5-0.5 lead and rattled off nine points to Alvernia's one in the singles matches to secure the victory. The victory marks the third straight year the Lions have won the Yocum Cup and marks the longest streak for the Lions since 2010 when they won it four times in a row from 2008-2010.

How it Happened

Matthew Gagliardi was the lone point scorer on the day for the Golden Wolves and recorded a 4&3 victory over Albright's Charles Bailey. Gagliardi came out of the gates hot and won four of the first five holes of the day to take an early four up lead. Bailey then won the sixth and seventh holes to cut it to a two hole deficit but Gagliardi bounced back with a birdie at the eighth to take a three up lead into the back nine. Gagliardi then won the 11th and 12th holes to push his lead to five up with five to play. Bailey extended the match with wins at the 13th and 14th to cut it to a three hole lead for Gagliardi but Gagliardi responded with a par at the 15th that closed the match out, 4&3.
Shawn Williams took on Albright's Nontaphat Veratecha and dropped his match 2&1. Williams took the early lead after taking the first two holes but Veratecha then won the next three holes to swing the lead in his favor, one up. Williams bounced back after winning the sixth hole but Veratecha won the eighth and took a one up lead into the back nine. Williams took holes ten and 11 to take the lead back and held the one up lead heading to the 14th tee but Veratecha won the 14th, 15th and 16th to close Williams out and took the match 2&1.
Zachary Neuin competed against Federico Cobos Kallmann from Albright and lost his match to Kallmann 3&1. Kallmann grabbed an early two up lead after the first four holes before Neuin birdied the fifth to pull within one. Kallmann bounced back with a birdie of his own at the sixth to take a two up lead into the back nine. Neuin leveled the match at the 11th after back to back pars at ten and 11. Kallmann responded again by winning the 12th but Neuin bounced back again with a birdie at the 13th to square the match back up. Kallmann then ripped off three wins in a row on 15, 16 and 17 to close the match out 3&1.
Chase Smith faced off against Jonatan Liljeblad from Albright and dropped his match to Liljeblad, 4&3. Smith won the first hole of the day but then Liljeblad recorded five of the next eight holes to take a four up lead into the back nine. Liljeblad then pushed his lead to as many as six after wins at the tenth and 11th before Smith won holes 12 and 13 to cut it to a four hole deficit. Smith and Liljeblad then halved the 14th before also having the 15th and closing the match out, 4&3.
Jakob Chapman played in the fourth match off the tee for the Golden Wolves and dropped his match to Albright's Filip Hjerten, 3&2. Chapman started the day two up after winning the first two holes of the day before Hjerten won five of the final seven holes of the front nine to take a three up lead. Chapman got it back down to two after winning the tenth and the 12th but Hjerten then won the 15th hole and halved the 16th to close the match out, 3&2.
Matthew Overholt faced off against August Fredrik Alhanko from Albright with Alhanko taking the one up victory. Alhanko won the first four holes of the day to take an early four up lead. Overholt then won the eighth and the ninth holes to cut the deficit down to two heading to the back nine. Alhanko then pushed his lead back to three up after the 11th but Overholt came back and won the 13th, 14th and the 17th hole to pull within one heading to the 18th hole. Overholt and Alhanko halved the 18th hole as Alhanko secured the one up victory for the Lions.
Matt Davies played in the second match of the day for the Golden Wolves and took on Albright's Jason DiRita. DeRita tallied a 5&3 victory over Davies and won three of the first four holes to take an early three up lead. Davies then righted the ship and won the fifth and sixth holes to cut the deficit down to one but DiRita won the seventh and the eighth to take a three up lead into the back nine. DiRita then won the 11th hole to push it to a four up lead before winning the 15th to close out the match, 5&3.
Jacob DeWitt took on Evan Twyman from Albright and Twyman came away with the 8&6 victory over DeWitt. Twyman won the first seven holes of the match to take a seven up lead into the back nine. Twyman then closed the match out on the 12th to secure the 8&6 victory.
Kenton Lightburn played in the third match of the day and took on Albright's Ashton McKechan. McKechan recorded a 7&6 victory over Lightburn and tallied wins on the first three holes of the day to grab an early lead. McKechan then won the final three holes of the front nine to take a six up lead into the back nine. McKechan would go onto win the 11th hole to push the lead to seven up and then halved the 12th hole to close out the match and secure the 7&6 win and grab a point for Albright.
Brock Mueller played the first match of the day and was defeated by Albright's Sam Elsen, 8&7. Elsen won the first three holes of the day and then took three of the final four holes of the front nine to take a six up lead into the turn. Elsen then won the tenth and the 11th holes to close the match out and record the 8&7 victory.

The Yocum Cup marked the end of the fall season for the Golden Wolves.
