Reading, Pa (Fri. Oct. 30, 2009) - The Vern cruised to a convincing victory as host Penn State Berks skated with a short bench that could not match the Crusader speed and intensity. Alvernia's well balanced offense featured six different goal scorers. The game marked the first time Alvernia has played the Blue Lions in an official ACHA Division III conference game.
The Crusaders lit the lamp early leaving little suspense of the outcome. Defenseman Kevin Shupp (Cranford, NJ / Cranford HS) scored his first collegiate goal blasting home a slap shot from the left point only moments into the game to give the Vern a 1-0 lead. First line forward Sean Castineira (Philadelphia, Pa / Roman Catholic HS) tallied what proved to be the game winning goal at the 2:28 mark of the first period. Anthony Froio (Glenolden, Pa / Interboro) and Devon Coleman (Hamilton, NY / Hamilton HS) added goals before the first intermission to give a comfortable 4-0 cushion to build upon.
Alvernia surprisingly only managed one goal in the second period. Sean Castineira ticketed home his second goal of the evening to increase the lead to 5-0. Castineira continues to build impressive offensive numbers leading the Crusaders in total points with 9 goals and 8 assists. Aggressive PSU Berks forward Alex Homa's attempts to mix it up physically were countered with strong physical play from Vince DiMarco (Denver, Pa / Cocalico HS) and Kevin Shupp. DiMarco answered the call for Alvernia with strong corner play cancelling out any intimidation factor mounted by the Blue Lions.
The flood gates opened in the final period as the Vern buried four goals to complete the 9-1 win. Jim Fynes (Philadelphia, Pa / Roman Catholic HS) stood tall in the pipes seeing limited action in his end. PSU Berks connected while working a two man advantage after some sloppy penalties with their lone goal of the evening. Addition Alvernia goal scorers in the third period included Zane Camburn (Rieglesville, Pa / Nazareth HS), Devon Coleman, Anthony Froio. Pat Dolan (Cranford, NJ / Cranford HS) finished the scoring with his first career collegiate goal at the 17:47 mark of the third period. Defenseman Matt Peters (Phoenixville, Pa / Phoenixville HS) fed a pass into the offense right circle with Dolan finishing a hard snap shot into the back of the net.
