BOX SCORE
Pennsauken, NJ (Friday Oct. 14, 2011) -
Colin Goebel (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) scored two goals to lead the Crusaders over Rutgers- Camden University 5-2. The Vern struggled to find continuity on Friday night but managed to come away with a road win and move to a perfect 6-0 on the season. The win improves the Crusaders DVCHC record to 2-0.
Alvernia found itself down early as Rutgers opened the scoring on a redirected tipped shot from the blue line. Rutgers' 1-0 lead represented the first time this season that Alvernia has trailed in a contest. The Vern rebounded to tie the score at the midpoint of the first period as Goebel deflected a shot from line mate
Sean Castineira (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic HS). Goebel scored his second goal of the period less than two minutes later with a sneaky wrap around stuff shot just inside the right post.
Lucien Staquet (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown HS) finished the opening period scoring giving the Crusaders a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Rutgers- Camden connected for the only goal of the second period and a closer-than-it-appeared game moved into the third period with the Vern clinging to a one goal lead. The Crusaders clanged two posts and a cross bar but could not light the lamp.
Alvernia finally got a little breathing room in the final period with goals from
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa. / Boyertown HS) and freshman
Brian Callahan (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Moreland HS). The Vern outshot Rutgers 42-13 but were continually frustrated by and outstanding performance by Rutgers goaltender
Ryan Savage. Crusader goaltender
Jim Fynes (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic HS) saw limited action facing 16 shots recording his third win of the season with no losses. Fynes made several key saves when the game was still in question and both Rutgers goals were redirection screen shots.
The Crusaders will host Richard Stockton College of New Jersey for the home opener on Saturday night.
