BOX SCORE Harrington, De. (Sept. 30, 2012) - Freshman standout
Nico Delgiorno (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) recorded his first career collegiate hat trick en route to a 6-0 white washing of Salisbury University on Sunday afternoon. Alvernia University is now a perfect 5-0 to start the season and continues to wear down the opposition with continuous offensive attacks and timely goaltending.
The Sunday matinee featured the Salisbury University Gulls (0-3) hosting the Crusaders for the first time down at the Delaware State Fairgrounds Ice Complex. Alvernia holds a 4-1 record lifetime versus the Gulls and a two-game winning streak, outscoring the Gulls 15-1 over those two games.
Freshman
Scott Dressler (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) opened the scoring at the 15:11 mark of the first period with assists from
Billy Borrmann (Long Beach, Ca./Somerset) and
Alex Harris (Avon Lake, Oh./ Wooster). Dressler's tally also represented the eventual game-winner. Sophomore
Eric Pawlick (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored the highlight-goal of the game midway through the first period. Alvernia, skating with a two-man disadvantage received a game-changing shorthanded effort. Pawlick stole a loose puck at center ice, quickly converting a break-away freezing the Gulls' net minder with a chip shot wrister inside the top left corner.
The Crusaders finished the scoring late in the first period with Delgiorno tallying his first goal of the game and team leading 11th point. Delgiorno scored on the man advantage with
Kevin Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) assisting on the power play strike.
The 3-0 lead going into the first intermission gave the Crusaders a comfortable separation and only the goal posts and cross bar kept the score from steam rolling out of hand. The Vern rang the pipes six times over the afternoon.
Additional scoring came from Mengel and Delgiorno who picked up his fifth and sixth goal of the season. Defensively, the Crusaders collectively got excellent support from defensemen
Andrew Dziedzic (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and
Anthony Galeano (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep), both came up strong killing several two-man disadvantages with shot blocking strong individual efforts. Murray was impressive again in the cage stopping all 15 shots, recording his third win of the young season.
Alvernia heads into conference action with back-to-back games next weekend against rivals Penn State Brandywine and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
